• This is a remote position. • Legal Translators, Editors and Transcribers in a Variety of Languages – U.S. Citizens (Remote) • GLS, a woman-owned small business headquartered in the Washington DC metropolitan region, is currently seeking talented freelance translators, editors, and transcribers to translate, edit and/or transcribe legal documents between English and one or more of the following languages: Albanian, Armenian, Belarusian, Bengali, Bosnian, Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dari, Dutch, Estonian, Farsi, Finnish, Greek, Hebrew, Hungarian, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Macedonian, Moldovan, Oromo, Romanian, Serbian, Slovak, Slovenian, Swedish, Tamil, Thai, Ukranian, Vietnamese or Yiddish. • Location: Remote • Status: Contractor, Part-Time • Provide accurate translation of documents and/or transcription of audio files involving law enforcement and legal subject matter from foreign languages into English or vice versa. • Edit audio transcriptions that include slang and idioms. • Edit legal documents, such as affidavits, depositions, etc., while demonstrating a strong command of legal terminology in both English and the target language. • Excellent written communication skills in English and the target foreign language, with Advanced Proficiency (reading/speaking/listening, writing) level 3-plus in English and the foreign target language, as assessed by the International Language Roundtable (ILR) scale. • Translate and/or transcribe following the government client’s style guides and quality standards. • Use domain-specific terminology. • Review and certify the quality of other translators’ work, as needed. • Highly proficient in MS Office, with the ability to mirror source document format in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. • Familiar with the use of CAT tools, such as Trados Studio. • Abide by a code of ethics when performing transcription and translation work.
• U.S. Citizen residing in the United States. • Holds active Public Trust or higher security clearance or willing to undergo a U.S. government background check to obtain a Public Trust Clearance Moderate Level. • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience. • At least 3 years experience in translating and/or editing between English and a foreign language. • At least 3 years experience performing audio transcription with the ability to use software to enhance sound and equipment to aid in transcription. • Familiar with legal terminology in both English and the target foreign language(s). • Proficient in Microsoft Office. • Translators and editors must proficiently use CAT tools, such as SDL Trados. • Law degree, paralegal certificate, or documented legal translation or transcription experience. • Experience with editing documents of audio transcriptions. • Active Public Trust or higher security clearance. • ATA, NAJIT or other relevant professional certification.
