Description

• Responsible for leading coding teams and coder training. • Performs coding reviews and audits. • Identifies documentation and coding issues to report to leadership. • Conducts audit of discharged inpatient records according to coding guidelines. • Monitors work queues, prioritizes and assigns accounts for coding. • Mentors and trains coders on application of ICD guidelines. • Collaborates with clinical documentation specialists. • Develops educational programs for coding staff. • Codes inpatient records and verifies DRG assignments. • Assists management with coding issue resolutions. • Participates in training workshops and collaborative education.

Requirements

• Education: Associate's degree or Coding Certificate through approved AHIMA or other coding certification program. • Experience: 4 years of experience in inpatient coding and abstracting, with healthcare billing process experience in acute care setting. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement. • Required Certifications: RHIT, RHIA, CCS, CIC or other approved coding credential. • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: • Knowledge of electronic medical records and 3M or Encoder System. • EPIC health information system experience (Preferred). • Strong knowledge of medical terminology and basic anatomy/physiology, pathophysiology, and pharmacology applicable to coding process. • Knowledge of MS DRG prospective payment system, severity systems, Clinical Documentation Improvement principles, quality indicators, formal and informal coding audit process. • Ability to work effectively, independently, managing multiple demands consistently. • Proficient computer skills (spreadsheets, database).
